As we welcome the month of August, I’m reminded that one caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. Every day across our nine-county service area, children are waiting for someone to believe in them, encourage them, and simply show up. That someone could be you.
Right now, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is actively recruiting volunteer Big Brothers, Big Sisters or Big Couples to help us create more life-changing mentoring relationships. While it only takes four to eight hours each month, the impact can last a lifetime. Research shows that young people with mentors are more likely to graduate from high school, pursue higher education, develop the confidence and resilience needed to succeed in school, work, and life and have higher earning potential throughout their lifetime. Yet hundreds of children across our communities are still waiting to be matched with a caring adult.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you have what it takes to make a difference, the answer is YES. You don’t need to be perfect; you simply need to be present.
August is also a wonderful time to connect with us beyond mentoring. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing inspiring Match stories, hosting community activations across our nine counties, highlighting volunteer opportunities, and celebrating the incredible people who make our mission possible. I invite you to follow us on our social media channels to stay connected, participate in fun online engagements, and help us spread the word by sharing our mission with your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Every like, comment, and share helps us reach someone who could become the next life-changing Big Brother or Big Sister.
Looking ahead, I hope you’ll mark your calendars for one of our most anticipated evenings of the year, our BIG Gala: Mission Possible, taking place Saturday, October 10, at The Motor Enclave. This unforgettable evening will celebrate the power of mentorship while raising critical funds to support the children and families we serve.
