It takes money to carefully screen, interview and support the volunteers and families in our program. Our professional Match Support Specialists actively oversee each Big/Little “match” to help them develop the strong, continuing relationships that provide the greatest benefit to the kids in our program. And there are always more children who can benefit from a relationship with a mentor. We’d like to provide a mentor to every single child who wants and needs one, but we can’t–without your help. Consider making a one-time gift or a multi-year pledge. You can also spread out your gift with easy monthly payments. Your donation is more important than ever.

One of the most rewarding stories we encounter is when a former Little, often in their 30s or 40s, comes forward and says, ‘I wouldn’t be where I am today, had it not been for my Big who helped keep me on the right track’.
Those stories inspire our supporters to not only make a donation to make an impact on a child today, but many are committed to making a difference for generations to come. A planned gift is a way to ensure your legacy of supporter.
The following pages will offer ideas as to how you can be a part, truly a partner, in helping children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact. Your gifts and support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay will not only help others, but will also lead to personal and emotional fulfillment.
Can you make a difference? Consider this: Studies show Littles in our program skipped half as many days of school as did their peers. Studies show Littles felt more competent about doing schoolwork. 98% of the children in our program had no involvement with the Juvenile Justice system. 97% of the children in our program were promoted to the next grade level. 70% of the children in our program maintained or improved their self-esteem.
Many companies have programs through which they will “match” the charitable contributions made by their employees. Through corporate gift matching, your employer can multiply your gift to BBBS, making it go further. Some companies will match the gifts of employee spouses and retired employees as well. Check with your company’s Human Resources office to see if they offer gift matching.

What is a donor-advised fund?
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a type of giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to easily support your favorite charities. An increasingly popular charitable vehicle, DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals.
How does it work?
- Establish your DAF by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program
- Advise the investment allocation of the donated assets (any investment growth is tax-free)
- Recommend grants to qualified public charities of your choice
What are the main advantages of a donor-advised fund?
Simplicity – The DAF sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
Flexibility – Timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision making.
Tax-efficiency – Contributions are tax-deductible and any investment growth in the DAF is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes and allowing you to support multiple charities from one block of stock.
Family legacy – A DAF is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.
No start-up costs – There is no cost to establish a donor-advised fund. However, there are often minimum initial charitable contributions to establish the DAF (typically $5,000 or more).**
No transaction fees – Once approved, 100% of your recommended grant goes to your qualified public charity of choice.**
Privacy if desired – Donors may choose to remain anonymous to the grant recipient.
** Sponsoring organizations generally assess an administrative fee on the assets in a DAF. These fees vary by sponsoring organization.
Charles Edward Manly, II a long-time Big Brother in Tampa who was matched with Little Brother Frederick, believed whole-heartedly in Big Brothers Big Sisters. Helping others in need meant the world to him. After he passed away, his parents and other family members have continued to donate in his honor. Rather than receive or give birthday/anniversary presents, friends and family instead donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we welcome gifts in honor or in memory of your loved ones. Through our online giving link, you can specify a tribute, notification name and contact information. We will send a notification letter to the contact you specify, so they know a gift was made in their name and how the gift supports our mentoring programs in the Tampa Bay community.
If you wish to send a check, please include a note with the following information:
- “In Honor Of or In Memory Of”
- Tribute Name
- Notification Name
- Notification Address
- Notification Email
Jacquez Welch, the 17-year-old Northeast High School student athlete who passed away in September 2019 from a previously undetected brain condition, was also a long-time Little Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay mentoring program. Jacquez was matched with a Big Brother for six years, including the last three with Mark Lombardi-Nelson.
As a tribute to Jacquez, Mark and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay are hoping to raise a minimum of $25,000 to set up a scholarship in his name.
