When NFL veteran and Ocala native Geron Christian returned to Trinity Catholic High School, it wasn’t to relive his football days; it was to invest in the next generation.
On July 11, Geron welcomed approximately 20 local children who are currently waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a special afternoon of creativity, connection, and encouragement.
The event centered around a custom sneaker design experience, where each child received a pair of white Converse sneakers, generously donated by Rack Room Shoes, to transform into a one-of-a-kind work of art. More than just decorating shoes, the activity encouraged self-expression, built confidence, and gave the youth an opportunity to spend meaningful time with a hometown role model who understands the power of believing in yourself.
“Ocala is home,” Geron shared. “Football has given me opportunities beyond anything I could have imagined, but one of the most meaningful things I can do is invest my time in the next generation. I’ve always loved expressing myself through creativity, and I hope these kids leave knowing they’re seen, valued, and capable of accomplishing great things.”
The day was made even more special with lunch provided by Big Man’s Cafe, Geron’s father’s restaurant, reflecting the Christian family’s shared commitment to giving back to the community that has supported them for generations.
For Geron, this event is just the beginning.
Inspired by his sister, who currently volunteers as a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Geron plans to officially become a Big Brother himself. His commitment is a powerful reminder that mentorship begins with one simple decision: showing up.
“Geron is using his platform to show young people that success isn’t just about what you accomplish; it’s about how you give back,” said Kate Griffin, Chief Program Officer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. “The greatest gift a person can offer is their time. It only takes four to eight hours each month to help a young person build confidence, navigate challenges, and realize their full potential. We’re excited to welcome Geron to our mission and grateful for the impact he’ll have as a future Big Brother.”
Across Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay’s nine-county service area, hundreds of children are still waiting to be matched with a caring, volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister. Events like this create unforgettable memories, but they also shine a light on a much bigger opportunity.
