SUMMARY:BIG Hall of Fame 2025
DESCRIPTION: The late Honorable Judge Edgecomb was the first African American assistant state attorney in Tampa before being appointed to the bench in Hillsborough in 1973. George also served as a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay and obtained many accolades during his brief but brilliant life\, passing at just 33. Mrs. Edgecomb’s dedication to scholastic success is visible through her years as a teacher\, school principal\, and later being elected to the Hillsborough County School Board. She and her daughter\, Allison\, also an educator\, remain active in the community to this day.\nIn the early 1970s\, George and Doretha volunteered to be matched with a young Black boy\, serving as what we now call a “Big Couple.” Our Big Couple program is based on two committed adults sharing simple aspects of their world with a young person for a few hours a month while modeling healthy relationships and communication skills.\nIn the spirit of this legacy\, the Hall of Fame and Edgecomb Mentoring Circle partners\, donors\, and volunteers will support mentoring relationships and experiences for kids\, helping them reach their full potential. Of the 2500 youth served in 2024\, 85% qualify for free or reduced lunch\, 72% are Youth of Color\, and 40% have an incarcerated immediate family member.\nThe George & Doretha Edgecomb Mentoring Circle represents a full circle of support and commitment to our youth. For over 60 years\, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay has been a beacon of hope\, transforming lives through mentorship. We are proud to partner with the Edgecomb family to continue this powerful legacy and make an even greater impact on the lives of children in our community.\nThis year’s breakfast was an uplifting gathering of the community at Armature Works alongside the Hillsborough River. To welcome our guests\, we were treated to the beat of the drum line by the young musicians at Academy Prep Center of Tampa. Our program featured an insightful panel from our Hall of Fame Award recipients\, a full breakfast\, and powerful stories.
